Working with Children

When working with children and teaching them piano (or any type of instrument) the most important factor is to make sure they’re focused. This means being sure the child is practicing daily for at least 30 minutes. One of the biggest obstacles for children is that many of them don’t like to practice, which is normal especially at such a young age. This is why I strongly encourage each parent to monitor their child and be sure  that he or she is practicing as much as possible.

Working with Adults

When working with adults and teaching them piano (or any type of instrument), the most important factor that he or she needs to know is that you can still learn piano even at an older age. Many believe the only way to master any instrument is to start really young. Yes it’s best to start young. However, you can still master the piano as an adult. You just have to be dedicated to practice with additional practice hours that will accommodate your learning as an adult.

Practice

The key to learning how to master playing the piano and every instrument is to practice. All of the techniques, tips and secrets that are taught to you for playing piano will only work at their full capacity if you put in the appropriate amount of hours to practice. Below are details explaining how you should practice depending on your age:

Young Adults and Adults – Ages 16 and older:

  • For standard level – practice 2 hours a day with a 10 minute break in between each hour. Minimum 4 days a week. Maximum 6 days a week.
  • For advanced level – practice 4 hours a day with a 10 minute break in between each hour. Minimum 5 days a week. Maximum 7 days a week.

Children – Ages 10 to 15 years old:

  • For standard level – practice 1 hour and 30 minutes a day, with a ten minute break after your first 45 minutes. Minimum 4 days a week. Maximum 6 days a week
  • For advanced level – practice 3 hours a day, with a 10 minute break in between each hour. Minimum 5 days a week. Maximum 7 days a week.

Children – Ages 5 to 9 years old:

  • For standard level – practice 30 minutes a day. Minimum 4 days a week. Maximum 5 days a week
  • For advanced level – practice 1 hour a day. 30 minutes in the morning, then 30 minutes later in the evening. Minimum 4 days a week. Maximum 6 days a week.

*Please note these are tentative lengths and times that can be increased or decreased according to one’s skill level, schedule and depending on how fast they want to see results.

FAQ’s

  • What’s the youngest age a child can start taking piano lessons? – The youngest age I start as a piano teacher is 5 years old. For children this young I recommend 30 minute lessons only. For your child to be able to start piano lessons at this young age he or she would have to know their ABC’s (at least the letters A-G), how to count up to 10 and the difference between the right and left hand.
  • What’s the oldest age a person can be to start learning the piano? – The great thing about learning to play the piano or any instrument is that you can start at any age. The younger you are the better but you can learn and master it at any age. There truly is no limit.
  • How long will it take before I can start playing fluently? – Music is an entire language and learning to play music in any form such as an instrument is learning a language within itself. Like all languages and skills, the time it takes to master it varies. It truly depends on how much time you invest into practicing and how often you apply your learned techniques. However, the average amount usually ranges from 3-5 years. Also keep in mind the more advanced you want to play the higher number of years it’ll take. For example, to progress to a phenomenal level such as Stevie Wonder or Mozart will usually take longer than 3 years.
  • Does it matter what genre of music I want to play to receive piano lessons from you? – No it doesn’t. The amazing thing about learning piano and other instruments is the fact that the basics and foundation are all universal. Once you learn the foundation to playing you can apply it to any genre of music.
  • Will I learn just as much taking virtual classes as I would taking in-person classes? – Yes, the virtual classes are just as professional, effective and fine tuned as my in-person classes. You receive just as much attention, techniques and helpful worksheets.

She is very professional. Also she puts you on the right path to make consistent progress if you listen and do your homework before the next lesson.
